Fawn

John hadn't checked in with any contacts, he hadn't really read the papers, and hadn't been keeping on his fringe websites. He was in love, and he didn't want to waste a moment. He had no idea how long this was last, but he was all in...to the detriment of the rest of his life.

He'd taken Fawn out and they'd got 99's. The weather took a turn, though, and the pair found themselves eating ice cream in the rain under an awning. John smiled at him, but the smile fell as the rai stopped falling. Not ended, simply froze in the air. The curtain of water parted and ahandsome Black man with orange-gold eyes stepped.

"Constantine," he said, then looked at Fawn as if he was rubbish. "Fae."

"Manny," John replied, "What do you want?"

He subtly slipped closer to Fawn and put his arm around him protectively.

"More than anything," he assured him.

It occurred to him that Chas hadn't had an opinion in a long time. That was...odd. This was just the sort of time he'd pick to make John feel like an asshole.

"I do not know if I can rank my loves. Bees are really lovely, you know? But you matter most to my heart," Fawn said quietly. "I would choose you over bees."

"Good to know where I rate," he smirked, then eased in slowly and stole a soft kiss.

Fawn smiled into the kiss, purring a little.

"We should go inside," he murmured softly. "The rain's let up. Come on."

The rain hadn't let up much at all and John got out, popped his collar up, and waited for Fawn to join him.

Fawn was unbothered by the rain, in no rush at all as the droplets soaked through his clothes. Back home he'd often wandered barefoot in the rain, feet muddied by mossy soil.

With Fawn at his side, John cut through the park to the cottage. Flowers drooped with the weight of the water.

Inside it was warm and welcoming and the exorcist carefully hung up his wet coat before scrubbing his hand through his hair.

"I could use some tea," he decided.

Fawn moved to light the fire, stripping beside it out of his wet clothing.

"That would be nice," he smiled. "Mint tea, maybe?"

"If you're making it, make what you fancy," he smiled. "I'm happy with anything, so long as it's hot. "

Fawn stretched lazily, then nodded before moving to pull on his nightgown.

"What shall we eat tonight?" he asked as he put the kettle on.

"What about pasta?" John suggested several moments too late, lost as he was in awe of the glimpse of skin.

"Yes, okay," Fawn nodded, moving closer and nuzzling at John's shoulder.

It was so easy to shift and wrap his arms around Fawn. So easy to kiss him and immediately forget food, forget tea, forget everything.

"You are damp and cold," the fae laughed, wriggling free. "Go warm yourself, I will put water on the stove, but tonight you will be the chef."

John chuckled and let him go.

"So bossy," he teased, then went to dry off and change. With no plans but eating, John slipped into his sweats and a Black Flag t shirt.

"All right. One pasta a la John coming right up."

Fawn was pouring the tea, but purred happily at the mention of food.

"I like when you cook, I feel spoiled."

"You feel...from my cooking?" John chuckled, wandering into the kitchen. He found some veg and tomato and started a simple prima vera sauce. He whistled softly, putting it all together like he knew what he was doing.

"Not fending for myself is luxury," Fawn insisted.

[petty_dabbler]

"But do you enjoy it? I'm no chef," he grinned, bolstered by the compliment. He lit up inside at the thought that cooking was something Fawn genuinely appreciated.

"I enjoy it very much," The fae assured him, smiling softly.

The water was beginning to boil and John dumped in some pasta. He finished the sauce while it boiled, smiling to himself and sneaking glances at Fawn.

And in the back of his head and deep in his gut he knew he had no right to be so happy.

Fawn watched John cook, admiring the mortal as he worked.

"Your friend, the angel, why is he so demanding of you?" he asked after a moment.

[petty_dabbler]

"That is a long and complicated story," he said, stirring the sauce more slowly.

"I did a very bad thing, and I damned a young girl's soul to Hell. I couldn't bear it, so I thought I'd snuff it, but Heaven had other plans. So now I can't die, and they own my soul. So I do what I'm told," he explained.

"Why did you do that?" Fawn asked curiously. There was no judgement there though, only interest.

John was quiet for a long moment.

"I was so full of myself. Was so sure I could control the demon. But he took her..." he confessed. Even now, after all these years, it was his biggest regret. His deepest shame.
